Milton Keynes
Storm Under 16s (Division 1)
Result: 23rd December 2007. MK Storm 3 v Peterborough 0
(2-0, 1-0, 0-0)
Milton Keynes ground out a below-par victory against local rivals Peterborough to complete their fixtures for 2007.
MK started the match in commanding form. Josh Nicklin tore through the visiting defence from the first face-off, and his sharp pass was volleyed smartly home by Jacob Heron (00:09) in front of goal. MK went desperately close from the ensuing face-off, and they looked likely to score on every shift. When Ben Russell intercepted a weak Peterborough pass, he set Nicklin free to break down the ice and score back-handed (06:55) with the visiting defence in close attendance.
Had MK continued in such electric form, they could have run up a cricket score against a defence unable to cope with MK s power and pace in offence. Unfortunately they found themselves increasingly penalised through ill-discipline and fussy officiating, and the match descended rapidly into a sterile affair. Only Harry Bowers (22:39) brightened up the final two periods with a slapshot from the blue line during a rare MK power play. Nevertheless MK never looked like conceding a goal, with their defence dominant as usual, and Chris Chaplen in imperious form between the pipes earning a well-deserved shut-out.
This victory leaves MK in good position to continue their Championship title hopes in the New Year.
