Under14's Basingstoke v Storm

After last weeks relatively good start, today the 14’s were away at Basingstoke. In past years although not a guaranteed win a reasonable chance of one was usually expected.

This year however the junior Bison had strengthened their numbers with some Oxford players and had a few conference guys on show.

Well Basingstoke dominance was apparent from the start and within 8 minutes 20 MK were 0-4 down, received two penalties both converted and conceded a short handed goal. So straight away Storm were chasing the game, Macca found Fraser and his shot tested the keeper. Sam battled away in mid ice and again put in Fraser but again the shot was saved. Jordan was keeping the score down at the other end with a couple of good saves. Keegan and Thomas and Dan W and Robert were doing their best with some nice D work. As you can imagine the MK defence was a lot busier than Basingstoke’s but storm saw out the first with any further scoring.

The second period started like the first with an early Bison Penalty but MK played better this time and Jack made a good attack before being stopped. Jordan saved and set Keegan on his way, a lovely break from him costing past 3 men before shooting brought the best out of the Bison Netminder. Jack and Dan B tried to build in mid ice and when this broke down Dan W was on hand to prevent a breakaway. A minute later though a couple of harsh penalties saw Dan W sitting out 14 minutes of penalties. MK’s shorthanded teams were now on song though and they defended well, Keegan even managing a shot after a pass from Jonathan L. Fraser moved forward and played a nice one two with Henry and MK genuinely looked a better team. Basingstoke upped the anti however and charged forward and with just over 3 minutes to go in the period they notched number 5. The pressure continued relieved only by a nice break from Sam but Jordan was again very busy and smothered one

just before the second period buzzer.

At the start of the third MK changed their Netminder and Jonathan Metherell took over. MK started the period nicely with some good break building, Henry passed to Fraser who put in Macca but he was pounced on. Keegan then found Fraser but the shot was saved. Jonathan L defended the next attack and cleared well up to Macca. He fed Henry who was tackled but Robert picked up the loose puck and fed Macca again. A real concerted effort was being made but two goals in less then a minute knocked the stuffing out of Storm and now it was 0-7. Jonathan M made a good save to keep it at 7 and a break by Robert and Sam saw Sam’s shot saved before Jonathan was left with no chance for number 8.

A disappointing result, yes but with most of the team only playing their second U14 ‘A’ league hockey, perhaps not so surprising. Still we have Basingstoke at home in a months so plenty of time to plot our revenge.
